Stevenage based artist Marilyn Comparetto is in pursuit of developing a new ‘ism’. Encouraged by the bravado of some of the greatest artists of our time, and in particular Picasso, Marilyn has ‘dared’ to put a name to her style of working rather than have it recognised as purely expressive, post modernist work.

Marilyn is not saying that other artists do not or have not worked in this way before however she is putting a name to it or a ‘new’ label. So determined is she that it will succeed, Marilyn has even trademarked the words ‘Mixism – the ultimate form of expressionism’. This trademark is used to both certificate her own work and also to hopefully be recognised, in future years, as the artist who took the initiative to add this to the list of ‘isms’.

Marilyn’s latest works, that are painted using the Mixism technique, always have an explanation attached to them. These explanations are written in a variety of styles that consist of either prose, poetry or a direct statement.

What is Mixism? Marilyn explains that is simply a free style form of art that can be painted using as many mediums, and isms in one work that is needed to express an idea or thought. Usually the first stages of the painting will be developed by drawing a sub-conscious line, or doodle, that fills the centre of the canvas. Within these lines a story or idea will unfold that is usually deep seated in the experiences of life or a reaction to circumstances around her.

Spewed onto her canvases are bold and unnerving revelations that can be related to people from all walks of life. These paintings are rarely a sight of a beautiful world that we would all like to live in as the works usually depict profound fears and the reality of the desperation of mankind.

Marilyn has recently been giving demonstrations to art societies around the UK to explain her style of work to other artists and has also been exhibiting her works both abroad and in the UK.
